This week we continue the series with an interview with Soulfly drummer, Joe Nunez, available exlusively at MySpace.com/Soulfly. Soulfly entered Bobby Burns' Porch Studio on September 12th, and we haven't had a chance to check in with Joe since then, but this interview gives a good indication of what to expect.

Max Update #2 Posted by ryan
on 07.08.2007

The second installment of Soulfly Web's Q&A sessions with Soulfly vocalist Max Cavalera was recorded yesterday, and today it has been added to the site. In my short conversation with Max this week, we discussed the upcoming album from his recently formed side project with his brother Igor Cavalera on drums, Soulfly guitarist Marc Rizzo on lead guitar, and Gojira guitarist and vocalist Joseph Duplantier on bass - which he, Igor, and the rest of the guys enter a studio in Los Angeles to begin recording TODAY! We also talked about his vocal contributions to east coast hip-hop artist Ill Bill's new album The Hour Of Reprisal, the current state of writing on Soulfly's next album, and the 11th Annual D-Low Memorial Show that has planned for Tempe, Arizona on August 31st. To follow Max another step on the path to the eventual release of both his album from this new project with Igor as well as the next album from Soulfly, click the link below to see what he has to say about all of these topics.

Joe Nunez Checks In;
11th Annual D-Low Memorial Festival on August 31st!
Posted by ryan
on 07.04.2007

Soulfly drummer Joe Nunez has sent along this update from Chicago, where he is working, playing, resting, and preparing for the next Soulfly album:

"This summer I've been working construction and rehearsing with my side project, Slampede. Our new singer/guitar player, Kevin Kowalski, is the latest addition to our band and we've been shredding ever since. We will be looking forward to playing live in the near future and updating our myspace/websites later this year! You can check out some music from our last album, The Revolution, at myspace.com/slampede.

I've also been breaking in my new Gen-X drums by Premier, and I'm loving it. I've really been hitting it hard and practicing for the new Soulfly record! Hopefully, we'll be out on the road again and then recording soon...Cheers!!

Joe"

In other news, Soulfly has just scheduled the date for the 11th Annual D-Low Memorial Festival. On August 31st, after Soulfly returns from their short tour of Western Europe, they will perform alongside several other as-of-yet-unannounced very special guests at the Marquee Theatre in Tempe, AZ. This will be Soulfly's only U.S. show before they begin tracking the next Soulfly album in September. The D-Low Memorial Festival is a special event every year; in recent years, the show has been filmed for The Song Remains Insane DVD release, and last year Igor Cavalera joined Soulfly on stage for the first time ever - reuniting Max and his brother to make music again. There's no telling what's in store for this year's festival, but it promises to be brutal. Check out luckymanonline.com to purchase tickets for the show. See you there!

Busy, Busy Burns Posted by ryan
on 06.26.2007

Soulfly bassist Bobby Burns has just sent along an update for us from his home in Florida:

"Wow.. shit; I've been SO fucking busy. On the Primer55 front, I just signed a deal with Crash Music Inc., and we'll be re-releasing the very first P55 record "As Seen On TV". It's going to be a CD/DVD type of thing, and it should be really cool. I have a band with Eric Rogers (ex-Stereomud vocalist) and Frank Fonserain (ex-Stuck Mojo drummer) called Love Said No. I've been bouncing back and forth from Atlanta to here in Orlando for that. We recorded at my studio, The Porch, and I couldn't be happier with it! Our myspace and all that shit will be up before I head out once again with Soulfly for Europe. I also just posted a few tunes that I did for my side project with Billy Keeton (ex-Skrape vocalist) and Will Hunt (Tommy Lee, Dark New Day drummer), and you can find that over at myspace.com/kingstreetmusic

Other than that, I'm just gearing up for Europe, and I'm excited as hell to get to work on the new Soulfly record!!!!!! It's gonna be fuckin' sick."

For those who don't know, Primer55 was Bobby's main musical outlet before he joined Soulfly full-time in 2003. The band formed in 1997, became a staple for the rapcore scene following their first two releases, toured with a bunch of quality bands, and sold a couple hundred thousand albums. After 2001, Primer55 ceased to play together and it was unclear whether they would work with each other as a band again. However, in the last year, Bobby and Primer55 vocalist Jason began to write some music again, and just last week they announced that the project has recently signed to Crash Music Inc. Their first release through the label will be a two-disc digipack constisting of an audio CD featuring a collection of unreleased tracks and a DVD of rare concert footage. For more information go to myspace.com/officialprimer55.

Bobby will be joining the crew at "All Knowing Force" tonight, Tuesday June 26th, for a live interview that will be broadcast for free online at AllKnowingForce.com at 10PM EST! Among other things, they will be discussing the resurrection of Primer55 and the happenings of Soulfly, so tune in. Listeners are often encouraged to call on the studio line during the show to ask questions directly; to ask a question to Bobby call "All Knowing Force" at (347) 410-9416 or message via IM (AIM) to "allknowingforce" during the show tonight.

Exclusive Soulfly Cover Available in Kerrang! Issue 1164 Posted by ryan
on 06.20.2007

As of today, June 20th, the Kerrang! Magazine that is available on your local magazine shelves and online at kerrang.com includes Higher Voltage, an exclusive free covers compilation that includes Soulfly's most recently recorded song from the studio. In April, Soulfly made the decision to go to L.A. to work on an interpretation of the Marilyn Manson original, "The Beautiful People". The decision to do this cover might seem odd to some Soulfly fans, but Max justifies his decision with these words: "although we're from very different music and visual styles, there's much respect and admiration and we both don't give a fuck about this bullshit society we live in."

When Soulfly Web interviewed Max in April, he had this to say about Soulfly's decision to contribute their interpretation of a "classic" rock song to the Kerrang compilation.

"Kerrang! sent me a list of songs that I could do for the compilation from England with many different covers we could do. Most of the stuff was classic; stuff like AC/DC, Def Leppard, and Marilyn Manson. There was even Sepultura, but there was no way I'm going to cover my own song for Kerrang!. Then I thought that Marilyn Manson would be cool, because it's a very weird song already. It's a heavy song, in a way, but it's also very different from the type of stuff that we usually play. So I thought it could be one of those songs that I can do into a cool cover, and I can stamp the Soulfly spirit and my vibe on top of it. It was very exciting, and I'll tell you what, Marc went crazy in the studio. He recorded guitar for 11 hours or something like that. It was in L.A. and was engineered by Logan Mader (currently of the production team Dirty Icon), who is a former Soulfly member and the former Machine Head guitarist. So it's going to be very cool, very kick ass, and I can't wait for people to hear it."

Along with Soulfly's cover of Marilyn Manson's "The Beautiful People", Higher Voltage features contributions from other contemporary rock acts, including covers from metal bands like a rendition of Dead Kennedys' "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" by Darkest Hour and a cover of Metallica's "Creeping Death" by Bullet For My Valentine. The Higher Voltage compilation will only be available with issue 1164 of Kerrang.

Upon hearing the final mix that Logan sent to Kerrang!, Max had this to say:

"The track came out just as I was hoping it would: direct and to the point. Like a hostage crisis, cannibal holocaust, or like Marilyn Manson meets the Brazilian Godzilla with four heads ready to destroy the planet."

Max Update #1 Posted by ryan
on 06.18.2007

To continue with the mission of conveying Max's writing techniques and also to keep fans well informed on the writing and recording of the next Soulfly album, we will be getting an update direct from the mouth of Max every other week. Twice a month, Max will sit down with Soulfly Web for a brief Q&A session that will cover a range of selected topics, and his answers will then be published here on the site on the following Monday. For now, the interviews with Max will be transcripted into text, but later in the summer - closer to recording time and especially the album release - we plan on eventually broadcasting the show direct to your computer as a podcast.

We're jumping right into it this week with MAX UPDATE #1. In this week's round of questions and answers we cover topics such as Max's writing influences on the next album, Soulfly's expected recording and fall tour schedule, and the nature of a project the was revealed by Sirius that Max has begun to work on with his former Sepultura bandmate and brother, Igor Cavalera.
